prototype.\u00a0 It weighs 24.7 ounces using a Towerpro motor with a Master Airscrew 7&#215;5 prop and a 2200 mAh Thunder Power 3S lipo pack.\u00a0 The servos are HS-65&#8217;s from Hitec.\u00a0 The receiver is a 7000 series from Spectrum on 2.4.\u00a0 The speed control is the old, nasty Polk 18 amp that Denny used to provide out of Polecat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PECL_and_contrails.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33\" title=\"Push-E Cat V5 and Contrails\" src=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PECL_and_contrails-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Shot of the PEC V5 Prototype in frame with some jet contrails\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PECL_and_contrails-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PECL_and_contrails.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yes, it actually flies!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now, I know 24.7 ounces may not seem all that &#8220;Lite&#8221;.\u00a0 Given, though, how my previously built Push-E Cats tended to come in around 30 ounces back in the day of Speed 400 longs and 8xKR1700 mAh NiCad packs, I&#8217;ll take it.\u00a0 The tail feathers on this particular model have excess carbon rods and bamboo stick in them, for example, because I wanted to see how each stiffened the 2mm coroplast.\u00a0 Also, the kraft paper laminate in the tail, while perfectly functional, will probably be replaced with .052x.177 carbon fiber based on my experiences with the Flat cat.\u00a0 More on that in a bit.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, I love how this prototype flew.\u00a0 The reduced weight plus the performance increase from the TowerPro motor let it really scramble up into the air quickly.\u00a0 The only downer was that the fixed Master Airscrew prop turned into a barn door when I cut the throttle.\u00a0 I&#8217;m working on setting up a 3mm compatible folding prop setup to try using an Aeronaut 7&#215;4.5 folder next.\u00a0 All the adapters I have right now are set up for 3.2 mm shafts and that causes issues, oddly enough, ranging from excess vibration with the set-screw types to an inability to clamp for the collet types.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_canopy_fix1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36  \" title=\"V5 Canopy Fix\" src=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_canopy_fix1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of mod to canopy to fit fuselage used for prototype\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_canopy_fix1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_canopy_fix1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The things I did to get by...<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I did a list of the things that I&#8217;d consider &#8220;improvements&#8221; to work in my favor for weight reduction.\u00a0 I tried it in several placed during this build even through the wing was one of Denny&#8217;s old ones with a balsa trailing edge.\u00a0 I managed to actually make it work pretty well, but in doing so I used things like my &#8220;shot bags&#8221; to weigh the whole mess down while the polyurethane cured.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, let me back up a bit.\u00a0 Kraft paper composite is a way I came up with to selectively reinforce and stiffen EPP without dumping money into carbon fiber.\u00a0 I came up with the idea after remembering some experiments that Pat Mattes did over 10 years ago with old paper shopping bags, latex paint, and a vacuum bagging system.<\/p>\n<p>The long and short of it is this: yes it works.\u00a0 The tail boom on the V5 prototype is VERY stiff, especially after it was covered with Ultracote.\u00a0 The down side is that it&#8217;s not something I would sic on a beginner.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t get the weights spread out right, the glue foams up and raises the paper.\u00a0 Worse, if you aren&#8217;t careful, it&#8217;d be really, really easy to lay in a twist to a structure that no amount of fancy heat gun work could take out.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/flatcat_proto_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41\" title=\"flatcat_proto_1\" src=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/flatcat_proto_1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"First flat cat prototype\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/flatcat_proto_1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/flatcat_proto_1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How I learned to quit worrying and trust carbon fiber<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Worse yet, I think that if you do it wrong, it&#8217;s heavier than carbon.\u00a0 Even if you do it right, it might be heavier, although it&#8217;s probably lighter than balsa.\u00a0 I&#8217;m basing that off my experience with the Flat Cat indoor\/park flier I built toward the end of the summer.\u00a0 I&#8217;m now a lot more comfortable with using CF in EPP, and I intend to take that direction with the V5 tail boom.<\/p>\n<p>That having been said, there is still a place for the kraft paper composite in the Push-E Cat.\u00a0 The trick is, however, to not try and put it on with polyurethane glue.\u00a0 Instead, you use 3M 90 spray adhesive followed by a urethane sealer.\u00a0 More on that in a bit.<\/p>\n<p>The end result of all this noodling around is that I have finally become comfortable with making all Push-E Cats with tapered tail booms.\u00a0 That means there&#8217;s no real need for a separate &#8220;Lite&#8221; Push-E Cat.\u00a0 Instead, I just have to give people who want to buy a kit a series of options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do you want a polyhedral wing or aileron wing? (Basically, do you want a bent wing or a flat wing?)<\/li>\n<li>What kind of motor mount do you want? (10 mm stick, bulkhead, or inrunner V-block)<\/li>\n<li>What color do you want your tail coroplast to be? (white, black, sky blue)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The removable tip option will come later after I find a suitable sheet metal supplier.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_cabin_interior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42\" title=\"V5_cabin_interior\" src=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_cabin_interior-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Shot of V5 cabin showing interior carbon stays\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_cabin_interior-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_cabin_interior.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carbon makes your wing fit right<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The tapered rear cabin and single rear hold down dowel will be a build option.\u00a0 Those wanting to take the easier route of having two dowels in back just like in front will avoid having to carve and sand the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing that I made sure to do was open up the cabin as much as I could.\u00a0 As the picture on the right shows, a couple of carbon stays are all that it takes to stiffen the wing saddle and cabin enough to make a difference.\u00a0 With that, I can now use a router to make a much larger bay under the saddle.\u00a0 My hope is that this, along with all that available space in the nose, will make the Push-E Cat V5 a viable aerial photography platform.\u00a0 Lord knows it has enough power and lift.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_motor_detail_towerpro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-43 \" title=\"V5_motor_detail_towerpro\" src=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_motor_detail_towerpro-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Detail showing motor mount and wire routing\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_motor_detail_towerpro-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garrisonaerodrome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/V5_motor_detail_towerpro.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#39;s the little details that count.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of little points that go into building a Push-E Cat, especially the V5, that go to making the thing more survivable than average.\u00a0 Like in the photo on the left, where you can see how I used a tie-strap to secure the motor wires to the pylon.\u00a0 The three black wires that go down through the wing are actually jumpers that connect via bullets to the speed control, thus maintaining the original design intent of having &#8220;break away&#8221;
